Die auf beiden Vorderdeckeln oben rechts befindlichen Zeichen 孝印 ergeben kein überprüfbares Wort. Möglicherweise bezieht sich das erste Zeichen 孝 auf die Abkürzung eines Namens, da 孝 auch las Takashi gelesen werden kann, die hauptsächliche Bedeutung ist jedoch „kindliche Pietät“, d. h. die Liebe für bzw. Fürsorge der Kinder gegenüber den eigenen Eltern.
Das darauffolgende, verschriebene Zeichen 印 steht für "Zeichen, Siegel".
Ihrem Zustand und der Zusammenstellung nach sind die beiden Bände vermutlich keine Verlagspublikationen. Möglicherweise wurden einzelne Holzschnitte sowie Teile von Serien von einem Sammler gekauft und privat als Alben zusammengefügt. Für eine Zusammenstellung durch einen privaten Sammler spricht ebenfalls, dass Holzschnitte aus der Serie wakan hyaku monogatari (和漢百物語) von Yoshitoshi Tsukioka in beiden Bänden enthalten sind.
Denkbar ist ebenfalls, dass die Alben von einem Händler, durchaus auch für (westliche) Touristen zusammengestellt und verkauft wurden.
Den Künstlernamen und Darstellungskonventionen nach entstanden die Holzschnitte ab/nach 1865. Einzelne Darstellungen sind bereits vor dieser Zeit belegt, scheinen aber den Farben nach später angefertigt worden zu sein.
